Discover how to make energy from human power and other simple renewable technologies. This session combines electronics fundamentals, hands-on builds and permaculture-aligned energy design.
Introduction to Human & Renewable Power
Energy is something we all use—but what if we could produce some of it ourselves? In this session we explore how to harness human effort and simple renewable devices such as thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and piezoelectric systems. Whether you're new to electronics or a seasoned maker, this workshop is practical, creative and grounded in permaculture ethics.
Pedal Powered Energy: Theory & Build
Pedal powered generators are a highly accessible way to make electricity. You'll learn:
- Basic understanding of electronics relevant to generator builds
- How to design systems to meet real needs
- Hands-on building of pedal powered systems
By the end of this session it is quite possible you will complete a working pedal powered charging system suitable for USB devices.
Exploring Other Energy Devices
We’ll also explore other devices that convert energy into usable power, such as:
- Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs)
- Piezoelectric energy systems
- Optional Arduino Uno tools to measure and record power metrics
This is flexible and responsive to what the group wants to explore, in true permaculture spirit.
Practical Session Details
This session is flexible and tailored to participants’ interests. Over the day we will:
- Complete yesterday’s builds (if still in progress)
- Build PA systems or other practical projects
- Explore additional energy harvesting ideas
If you can only attend on Saturday, you’re welcome to join for that day and pay the corresponding rate.
What Participants Say
"Attending the energy workshop was transformative. I never thought I could build a generator myself, and now I understand the electronics behind it. Highly recommended!"
